It's been a month since I started my webcomic and I haven't run off screaming into the hills. Huzzah! If you like superheroes, secret identities, and violent manipulation, it'd be swell of you to check it out.

In other news, I'm officially taking commissions. I've been planning to do this approximately forever, but now that I'm out of school and staring a near-future move in the face, it seemed like a good time.

For my purposes, a limited pallet means either black and white or shades of 1-2 colors, with or without shading and/or lineart. Sketches will be shaded in pencil unless otherwise specified. Lineart and color work will be done digitally unless otherwise specified.

I am starting a NEW blog, which hopefully unlike my old blog (which had no defining features or purpose) will not wither away into random handful-a-year postings. Because this time I'm really going to do things.

Namely, review books about vampires and talk about vampires in literature.

Vampires are not going to stop being cool ever, and though their market is pretty saturated right now I still like to read about them. I'm willing to bet other people do too. This might be wishful thinking on my part since the book I am currently trying to publish features vampires. But no matter. I like books with vampires, some are better than others, and if you'd like to know why I think so you can read all about it at

bittenlit.tumblr.com/

Or at least go look at my snazzy header; it's atmospheric and very purple.

I mean, my nickname in highschool was Vampire Lady, how much more qualified could I get?

You may have heard of Invisible Children, the people who've been trying for years to raise awareness about the crimes of the LRA. They abduct children and force them to become soldiers or sex slaves, and the man behind it has gone unpunished because the African countries where he opporates aren't able to catch him. KONY 2012 is an effort to keep interest and awareness high so international aid will continue until the leader of the LRA and number one most wanted international criminal, Joseph Kony, is captured.

Please take thirty minutes to watch the video and spread it around.

I'm in the top ten for a contest. hannahmosk.blogspot.com/2011/0…

The incredibly awesome and inspiring hannah moskowitz (she's an author, go read her books now) wanted us to design a new cover for her book, Invincible Summer. For some background, the novel is a YA about a family with four siblings and four summers they spend at their beachhouse. The family is full-on dysfunction junction, and the two older brothers do some not-so-healthy things, too, such as sharing a girl.

Thinking about their little brother, who's about kindergarten age when the book starts, I decided to do the picture in crayon. Like a psychiatrist's office drawing. Only, you know, good. (My psychiatrist office drawings always left a little to be desired.) The little brother is also deaf, so all the other kids know at least a little sign language, and it's used throughout the book. I was looking for words or phrases I could use for the cover when I realized that the sign for 'I' is an extended pinky, while the sign  for 'S' is a closed fist. Hence, you have male-hand making an inverted 'I' sign for invincible, and female-hand making an 'S' sign for summer, and it ends up looking like the girl is refusing to link pinkies with the guy (I never decided whether female-hand belonged to Claudia, their little sister, or Melinda, the girl they were sharing. Male hand could go for either of the elder brothers, as well.)

And that's all I have to say about that. I think it came out pretty nice, but I'm worried it's too washed out (it is crayon, after all, and I don't have photoshop right now) to stand up to all the digital art and photos. So please, if you're so inclined, go vote for number 9. I will give you virtual brownies and hugs.

Sincerely,

Sunny

I love my Mom

2 min read
I'm working on a piece: a gender-bended fairy tale, with a human-like race that I made up. My mother and I had this conversation whilst staring at the WIP in photoshop.

Mom: They're both girls?
Me: No, that one's a boy.
Mom: ... The boy's wearing a dress.
Me: It's a shift. Plus, you can barely see that part of him, so it doesn't matter.
Mom: The boy has boobs.
Me: Pecs. In profile, guy's pecs stick out like that. If he had boobs, it would look like this. *outlines boobs in red*
Mom: Can't the boy have a shirt?
Me: These are indigenas people from a place I made up. They don't wear shirts. Besides, the girl's wearing a fur bra and leather leggings, I can't give this guy an Oxford button-down.
Mom: ... That's a girl?
Me: She has boobs! *points to boobs* See? Boobs.
Mom: But that looks like a man's face.
Me: That is a really delicate nose for a man.
Mom: ... That is the biggest ear I've ever seen.
Me: They're supposed to be like that. I made them up.
Mom: The girl's hair is so short.
Me: It's a cropped afro.
Mom: Can't it cover her ears a little?
Me: ...Cropped afros can't do that.

My mother is a wonderful critic, but it's hard to explain that sometimes things are the way they are because that's the way I want them. She neglected to notice that both of the people's eyes were red, despite obvious evidence against albinoism, so that's one thing I got away with.
